It's Open Education Week and #IOLchat is participating with a discussion of how open educational resources (OER) can support college-level learning in both formal and informal ways. By definition OERs are "instructional materials that are freely available for use, reuse, remixing, adapting, and sharing" and can range from "stand-alone resources…to larger instructional modules or full courses. Students in academic courses may use OER to supplement their course materials. Instructors and curriculum developers may incorporate OER in their online courses. And lifelong learners may engage in OER on their own. Join our discussion of the benefits and challenges associated with open, online educational resources.
Q1) What is the appeal of using open educational resources?
Q2) What barriers exist in implementing open education resources?
Q3) How can we know the quality level of open educational resources?
Q4) What would motivate you to share something you created in an open, online format?
Q5) What are your recommendations for someone just getting started with open educational resources?
